ASTM E2422 and ASTM E2973 are two digital radiography reference standards for inspection of aluminum castings and magnesium die castings. These two standards has been compared in this article.

COMPARISON OF ASTM STANDARDS E2422 & E2973

American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) is an international standards organization that develops and publishes voluntary consensus technical standards for a wide range of materials, products, systems, and services. ASTM is the standard created to enhance safety and improve the quality of consumer and industrial products. This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

The digital reference images illustrate the types and degrees of
discontinuities that may be found in Aluminum-alloy castings.
The digital reference images illustrate various categories,
types, and severity levels of discontinuities that may occur in Aluminum-alloy and Magnesium-alloy die castings.
Thirteen digital reference images, previously only available as film reference radiographs (ASTM E155), are now available in a digitized format in the form of ASTM E2422.The Nine digital reference images, previously only available as film reference radiographs (ASTM E505), are now available in a digitized format in the form of ASTM E2973.
Suitable for castings up to thickness of 2inch (51mm). The standard covers die castings of aluminum and magnesium up to thickness of 1 inch (25.4mm).
Eight levels of grading available for each discontinuity type.Four levels of grading available for most discontinuity type and one for foreign bodies.

Karma’s opinion on usage of above two standards:
ASTM E2422 appears to be more stringent standard because even finer discontinuities have been graded when compared with ASTM E2973.The designer of the component may choose the standard based on the production method and the operating environment of the component.

We at Karma Innovations have developed a reporting software based on ASTM guidelines for Digital Radiography Reference Standards. The software can be used for any (Aluminum, magnesium, steel, ferrous castings) of ASTM Digital Radiography Reference Standards. This software has calibration and conjoint zoom among other features so that our clients can use Digital Radiography reference standards as per ASTM’s expectations.

SUMMARY:

The Film radiography reference images available are now available in the digital format. Being in digital format the standards are convenient to use for high volume digital radiography inspection. This article compares the two Digital Radiography reference standards (ASTM E2422 – 17 and ASTM E2973 – 15) provided by ASTM for aluminum castings and die castings and magnesium die castings.
