ASTM creates standard to enhance safety and improve the quality of consumer and industrial products. ASTM E2422 – 17 is one of the standards for digital reference images for inspection of aluminum castings .

DISCUSSION ON ASTM STANDARD E2422 – 17

American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) is an international standards organization that develops and publishes voluntary consensus technical standards for a wide range of materials, products, systems, and services.  ASTM creates standard to enhance safety and improve the quality of consumer and industrial products. ASTM E2422 – 17 is one of the standards for digital reference images for inspection of aluminum castings.

ASTM E2422 is the Digital Equivalent of E155

NOMENCLATURE – ASTM E2422 – 17

Thirteen digital reference images, previously only available as film reference radiographs (ASTM E155), are now available in a digitized format in the form of ASTM E2422.

E = miscellaneous subjects. 2422 = assigned sequential number. 17 = year of original adoption (2017) (or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision).

WHAT IS PROVIDED IN ASTM E2422?

Component Thickness Range:

E2422 provides digital radiography reference images that illustrate the types and degrees of discontinuities that may be found in aluminum-alloy castings. The castings illustrated are in thicknesses of 1/ 4 inch [6.35 mm] and 3/4 inch [19.1mm]

The images of the 1/4inch (6.35mm) castings are intended to be used in the thickness range up to and including 1/2-inch (12.7 mm).

The images of the 3/4-inch (19.1mm) castings are intended to be used in the thickness range of over 1/2 inch (12.7 mm), up to and including 2 inch(51 mm).

Levels and Types of Discontinuities:

There are eight degrees (Level 1 to Level 8) for each type of discontinuity in E2422 Digital Radiography Standard.

The discontinuity types are

  1. Foreign materials
  2. Gas hole
  3. Gas porosity elongated
  4. Gas porosity rounded
  5. Shrinkage (sponge)
  6. Shrinkage cavity

NOTES RELATED TO THE STANDARD

The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard.

These digital reference images are not intended to illustrate the types and degrees of discontinuities found in aluminum-alloy castings when performing film radiography. If performing film radiography of aluminum-alloy castings, refer to Reference Radiographs E 155.

All areas of this standard may be open to agreement between the cognizant engineering organization and the supplier, or specific direction from the cognizant engineering organization. These items should be addressed in the purchase order or the contract.
Only licensed copies of the software and images shall be utilized for production inspection.

A copy of the ASTM/User license agreement shall be kept on file for audit purposes.

This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

We at Karma Innovations have developed a reporting software based on ASTM guidelines for Digital Radiography Reference Standards. The software can be used for any (Aluminum, magnesium, steel, ferrous castings) of ASTM Digital Radiography Reference Standards. This software has calibration and conjoint zoom among other features so that our clients can use Digital Radiography reference standards as per ASTM’s expectations.

SUMMARY:

The Film radiography reference images available under E155 are now available in the digital format as E2422. Being in digital format the standard is convenient to use for high volume digital radiography inspection. This standard is for all types of aluminum alloy castings. Karma Innovations has developed a reporting software for the convenient use of ASTM E2422.
